 Chris,

 I found a default debian net-install on my system so booted it and made it
 my new boxbackup machine.

 A full checkout of trunk works on it now. ./bootstrap && ./configure &&
 make && make install-backup-server
 No errors or anything and after moving the certificates/keys and the
 configs to the machine everything starts without warnings and/or errors.

 I'll update my osx and client installs during this and next week to see if
 something happens there but you can close this issue as fixed.
