Sorry for the delay. Using that syntax it turned out that my openssl was
not able to read the certificate.
Why? Because the server CA was created with another (newer) version:
Server (Debian Etch): OpenSSL 0.9.8c
Client (Mac OS 10.4.8): OpenSSL 0.9.6
After installing a current version via darwinports everything worked
flawlessly instantaneously.
