I might do bits and pieces of trivial stuff, but the trunk feels like a
bit fo a dead end to me at the moment so I don't feel like investing a lot
of time in it.

OK, I'll watch out for your commits and try to merge them into my branches
as well. Or you could do it :-) I have no objection to other people
committing to chris/merge.

I think it's important that we keep autoconf stuff in sync, because it's
all cross-platform - something that you do for freebsd may well not work
on cygwin or linux, and we want to know about that as soon as possible.
