I think the bugs were most noticeable when funny things happened, for

Did you run the test as root?

It tests to see what happens if a file is unreadable because of 
permissions. root is not troubled by permissions, so can read it 
anyway. And so the test fails. I should probably spit out a warning, 
and not do the test when root.
