This depends of course on what you want to backup. If you cannot
access/lock the dataset in a 'halted' state for the duration of the
backup, you're right.
It's most likely easier, that's for sure.

Why would NTFS be a problem? Afaik you only need read access on the
source volume, wich is provided by a free driver.
