I know this may be entirely not what you are looking for, however

I plan to use IPCop's built in traffic shaping to throttle the traffic on the 
bbackup ports.

http://www.ipcop.org is a standalone linux firewall appliance distribution. very 
stable, maintained and has usb adsl drivers!
