[Box Backup] configure: error: OpenSSL is not installed?

Hi,

On ./configure I get errors:
 
checking openssl/ssl.h usability... no
checking openssl/ssl.h presence... no
checking for openssl/ssl.h... no
checking for SSL_read in -lssl... no
configure: error: OpenSSL is not installed but is
required

The sys is stable Debian sarge 2.4.27-2-386
I got OpenSSL 0.9.7e 25 Oct 2004 in my path
I got the default /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf

The OpenSSL notes did not help me, What am I
missing???
