Yes, it's extremely important and useful to have your help in finding and 
fixing this bug, since I don't think I'll be able to reproduce it. I don't 
think anybody has had such a problem before so there must be something

Have you tried not gzipping it on the storage array? I think your backup 
would be faster and more efficient this way.

This is definitely very odd. Could you try something for me? Run the 
following command on io:

 	strace -s 128 /usr/local/bin/bbackupquery "compare -aq" quit \
 	> /tmp/compare.log 2>&1

and gzip up /tmp/compare.log and send it to me?

Is there anything strange about the /data filesystem?

Do other kinds of compare work properly (e.g. not quick compare?)
