This is probably it then...

The new location is on a JFS filesystem. I tried to move
it to a new location in an ext3 filesystem and that worked
fine. (Sorry, should have tried that first...)

Do you have any suggestions what characteristics I should
look for in my JFS file system? Any system call I could try
to see whether it succeeds or fails?

Or is the debug version the next step anyway?
